Question by ilpjg: How common is it for parents to speak in one language and their children to reply in another?
The other day my friend and I saw a mother speaking to her kid in Spanish, but the kid would reply in English. Since I speak to my mom in one language and she replies in another, I thought it was normal, but my friend thought it was really odd.
I wonder how “normal” it is for parents and kids (or maybe bilingual couples or friends that understand both languages) to have a two language conversation.

Thanks.

i dont know of any statistics, but i have seen it before. it’s funnier still when there are several people in a conversation and three or more languages are used. i have been involved in such situations. since it is much much easier to understand a language than to speak it, this makes perfect sense–and in fact should be more frequent.
