Ron EA Powell mixes a variety of textures, techniques and styles in his persistent yet oddly unruffled paintings. The sensuous faces of his subjects are oft framed by painterly brushwork and expressionist flourishes, but whatever amalgam of techniques he uses, Ron’s concern is e’er the effusive impact of his portraits. At times pensive, contemplative or unabashedly torrid, Ron’s subjects uncover themselves to us while staying enigmatical.
This quality of mystery is advised mainly through Ron’s ocular strategy of hiding the specifics of his subjects’ eyes in shadow. If the eyes are the windows to the soul, then these mask-like faces, which look foreign yet besides conversant, act as our mirrors and become open to our effusive responses. These are people who have gained dignity by enduring life’s traumas, and display a difficult-won serenity. If we are honorable with ourselves, we can glimpse our ain triumphs and tragedies hither, as Ron EA Powell’s portraits uncover an esthetic philosophy committed to firing honestly rude psychological states.
