Anyone can add new words or sentences to Google Translate by going to http://translate.google.com/community. Users must select at least two languages, one of which must be English “as most evaluations focus on quality to or from English”. So if you want to translate from Chinese to Spanish – both of which have more speakers than English – you’re biased out. What’s worse is that anyone can add anything – adding to the CRowd-sourced Automated Pollution (CRAP). The result is idiocies such as the “gay geese” nursery rhyme being turned into “homosexual ducks”. But the worst is Google’s refusal to translate “Mein Kampf” at all, which I recently discovered. A modern-day translation might be “My Jihad”, but even that would be better than censorship. How many other “sensitive” issues are blanked out by search engine bias? ©AMD
